I recently read that organic tomatoes and tomato juice contain more healthful benefits than their conventional counterparts. Researchers attribute this greater accumulations of organic matter in the soil where the tomatoes are planted and the rate of manure application. “There appear to be genuine differences in the bioactive components of organic and conventional tomato juices not previously reported,” wrote an author in the Food Chemistry journal.
The organic tomatoes had higher levels of polyphenols. Polyphenols are natural compounds with numerous health benefits which include protection against cardiovascular disease and certain cancers. Conventional tomatoes have lower levels of polyphenols, minerals, and metabolites.
This is definitely something to keep in mind the next time you’re at the grocery store!
