5 Healthy Foods Norwegian People Eat for a Balanced Diet

December 18, 2024 by cookingtim Leave a Comment

Scandinavian cuisine is definitely exceptional. People who travel to Scandinavian countries, such as Norway, are always satisfied with their one-of-a-kind traditional meals and snacks. But like any delicious food, eating too much of this healthy Norwegian food can sometimes lead to weight gain. That’s why we people in this region usually follow the Nordic diet to balance their food intake and stay in shape.

If you’re a foreigner traveling to Norway for a long period of time, it only makes sense to be interested in every single traditional food. At the same time, chances are that you want to enjoy these culinary delights without compromising your health.

Lucky for you, Norwegian people consume various types of healthy foods that are locally sourced. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the typical food options Norwegian people eat for a balanced diet.

1. Fruits

Fruits

If you’re craving sugary snacks, instead of having processed foods and harming your system you could try fruits. Fruits are a natural and healthier source of sweetness. In Norway, the best fruits to have are berries. The reason why berries are usually considered a part of the Nordic diet is that they are extremely nutritious.

But what’s more, berries are convenient — you can prepare a lot of breakfast and dessert options by adding them to yogurt or oatmeal. In Norway, it’s common to enjoy berries as a quick and healthy snack during leisure activities, whether it’s scrolling through social media, watching a favorite show, or unwinding with a game like Brew Brothers Slot.

There are so many options in local stores for berries, especially wild berries like blueberries, raspberries, cloudberries, or lingonberries.

2. Fish

Fish

You can hardly find a better country for fresh and healthy fish than Norway. Thanks to its long coastline, Norway has rich fishing traditions, and therefore, their meals are like no other. Specifically, Norwegians enjoy various kinds of fish, such as cod, mackerel, or herring. But obviously, Norwegian salmon is the most popular type of fish. It’s popular not just in Norway, but it’s in demand everywhere around the world.

In general, fish is a great source of protein. Besides, it’s a source of omega-3, vitamin D, and fatty acids — all these nutrients make it an amazing main dish even if you’re on a diet. You can cook Norwegian fish in various ways, including grilling, baking, steaming, or curing. And if you have a good quality salmon, you can even eat it raw.

3. Whole Grains

Whole Grains

Whole grains are a popular healthy food option in Norway, specifically rye bread, which is common in this country. Other options for whole grains are oats, quinoa, brown rice, buckwheat, and many more. All these grains are filled with vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They also improve the digestion process and heart function, as well as regulate blood sugar.

Many healthy dishes are made with whole grains, including healthy bread, which can replace regular bread and prevent you from gaining weight. Norwegians especially adore cooking porridges using oats or barley and enjoying them as a warm, comforting breakfast, topped with berries.

4. Vegetables

Vegetables

Norwegians consider vegetables one of the most necessary foods to eat to be healthy, lose weight, and fill the body with needed nutrients. If you’re a vegan or vegetarian, you’ll probably find it convenient to explore Norwegian cuisine, as vegetables play a central role in many traditional dishes.

In Norway, you have incredible options for root vegetables, which include carrots, potatoes, turnips, beets, or rutabagas.

You might aim to avoid those vegetables as they’re high in calories, but the right amounts will only do good to you and your body. Those vegetables are full of vitamins, fiber, and minerals. To increase fiber in your system, you could also eat some leafy greens.

5. Legumes

Legumes

Finally, Norwegian people who follow the Nordic diet adore legumes, as they are a perfect source to get protein, especially if they don’t eat enough meat. Living in a foreign country sometimes be difficult for vegetarians and vegans, who think they can’t find the necessary foods. But luckily in Norway, you can find many types of peas and beans. Aside from protein, they contain complex carbohydrates, iron, and fiber.

Legumes provide various options for healthy dishes. They are often used to cook different types of soups, salads, and even stews, so you shouldn’t miss out on those plant-based protein sources as a part of a Nordic diet.

Bottom Line

Now you know that Norwegian people have various options for healthy food. When you’re visiting a foreign country for a long term or moving there, it can be a challenge to figure out what your food options are, especially when it comes to eating healthy.

Those 5 kinds of foods will help you stay in shape, maintain good health, and receive all the important nutrients you need. Along with all this, you’ll be able to explore healthy local foods and get creative with what you eat.
