Healthy Foods to Eat on New Year's Eve

December 30, 2025 by cookingtim Leave a Comment

The New Year is finally right around the corner, and everyone is preparing for this big day. While there are differences about how each country celebrates this holiday, they all have one thing in common: food plays a central role.

Let’s admit it: what we place on the table on New Year’s Eve sometimes matters even more than the holiday itself. After all, cuisine reflects the culture and traditions, as well as promising good luck for the following year.

Of course, each type of dish on the table for this night has its own meaning, but particular foods directly resemble fortune and good luck. Since everyone is hoping for the best things for the upcoming year, let’s take a look at 5 foods that are supposedly bringing good luck for the year ahead.

1. Black-Eyed Peas

Black-Eyed Peas

Black-eyed peas are known as one of the luckiest foods for New Year’s Eve, especially in the Southern part of the USA. The reason is that they very much resemble coins, which made the society believe this food could actually bring good fortune and prosperity. This definition of black-eyed peas also comes from US history.

During the Civil War, when it was a hard time for the American citizens, the food they were trying to survive on was black-eyed peas. This is why it has become a symbol of luck. From this perspective, having this food at a table on New Year’s Eve is a smart move. Think of it as an investment to secure your fortune, just like depositing at a Litecoin casino USA, where strategy and timing matter just as much as luck.

Typically, black-eyed peas are either steamed or slow-cooked. You can pair it with rice, pork, and vegetables, and season it with various spices to make it more delicious.

2. Pomegranates

Pomegranates

In many cultures, the pomegranate is a symbol of abundance, good luck, and fertility. The fact that in one whole fruit, you can find hundreds of seeds gives it the definition of an unknown, upcoming fortune. You will often notice pomegranate seeds on the table, for example, in the Balkans and Eastern European countries. You might even come across a whole or half of the fruit as a decoration.

It was believed from ancient times that pomegranates had a special meaning, and they could bring an infinite amount of luck everywhere. Even now, in some cultures, they are a part of New Year’s traditions. In Greece, when it’s time for New Year’s Eve, people smash a pomegranate, and the amount of seeds that spread around defines the fortune and stability for the following year.

3. Fish

Fish

Preparing fish for New Year’s is very common in numerous countries in Asia, as well as Europe. Since fish swim forward, they represent abundance, progress, and moving forward in life.

In each country, the fish types that are served for the evening vary. For example, salmon, carp, and herring are popular in Poland, Italy, China, and Japan. They are either smoked or baked. The scales of carp represent coins for the similarity. The fish head specifically has a meaning of wisdom and authority.

4. Greens

Greens

Greens are the symbol of money, financial success, and abundance. Considering they somewhat resemble cash and paper, a lot of households make sure to have various meals with collard greens in them for New Year’s Eve to attract fortune and good luck. These greens often include collard greens, kale, or spinach.

This belief is mostly common in African American and Southern countries. Darker colored greens are better, as they mean stronger luck.

Bottom Line

The New Year is one of the most significant holidays we celebrate, considering it gives us another chance and a new beginning. As you can see, certain foods are required to be present during New Year's Eve to ensure good luck and success for the following year.

While luck can never be guaranteed, traditions remind us to step into the future with hope and optimism. So, let’s at least try eating any of these 5 lucky foods right before midnight. Who knows, your upcoming year might be more fortunate than ever before!
