5 Healthy Foods Found in Ireland You Should Try During Vacation

February 7, 2025 by cookingtim Leave a Comment

While Irish cuisine might not be as famous as Italian or French food, tourists from all over the world can’t wait to explore traditional dishes once they set their feet on Irish soil. And if you’re a fan of hearty stews, fresh seafood, and dairy products, chances are that you’ll find local foods in Ireland ideal.

Interestingly, such a kind of comfort food isn’t everything why Irish cuisine is worth trying. Other than this, Ireland has a great variety of nutritious dishes that you can easily enjoy without feeling any guilt.

Let’s be honest, while on vacation, most of us expect to gain weight trying out traditional foods, but if you’re traveling to Ireland, you don’t have to worry because this country offers traditional dishes that are balanced yet delicious with the true Irish taste. In this article, we will discuss 5 of these kinds of foods.

1. Soda Bread

Soda Bread

Irish soda bread is one of the most exotic foods if you are visiting the country. Believe it or not, it’s considered one of Ireland's most distinctive foods that are traditional yet healthy. Many locals believe that Soda Bread brings luck, especially if you taste it on St. Patrick’s Day. Some even claim it doubles your fortune if you enjoy it right before playing the Lucky Penny game on online slot machines.

Soda bread is made with whole-grain flour instead of regular flour, which means it is full of minerals and vitamins, like vitamin B along with folate. Folate is important to get some energy boost. Soda bread is also high in fiber, and adding kefir fills it with a great amount of probiotics as well. This is why soda bread is a healthier option than regular bread and it is often used for more nutritious sandwich options.

2. Irish Stew

Irish Stew

If the idea of tasting a hearty dish with a great amount of protein sounds like something that makes you excited, Irish stew is the right choice for you. This stew is a very satisfying dish full of nutrients and an explosion of flavors. It is often cooked for Saint Patrick’s Day, which is one of the important celebrations for Irish people, so if you end up vacationing in Ireland on this day, you will have another reason to try Irish Stew.

You might consider Irish stew a food you eat on a cold day to get some warmth. The main ingredient of this dish is beed, which is important for health-related issues like low iron, as red meat is packed with iron and, of course, protein. A variety of vegetables are also used in this dish, usually potatoes, carrots, and parsnips, which add a good amount of antioxidants and phytochemicals and vitamin A, plus the flavor.

3. Boxty

Boxty

Boxty is one of Ireland’s signature dishes. It is a traditional pancake made with potatoes and its creation process dates back to the 18th century. The name “Boxty” came from an Irish phrase “aran bocht ti," which means poor-house bread. This explains that boxty used to be a simple dish for poor people. Nevertheless, it has become extremely popular, not just in Ireland but outside the country as well.

The key ingredient of this dish is obviously potatoes, specifically russet potatoes. What makes them healthy is that they consist of vitamin C and iron, which are crucial for a strong immune system. In addition, antioxidants in potatoes prevent diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart conditions. Boxty might come in different versions, like pancakes, dumplings, loaves, and more.

4. Grilled or Poached Fish

Grilled or Poached Fish

Grilled or poached fish is food you’d come across very often in Ireland. It is so much better than frying because while grilling or poaching the fish is prepared without adding any extra oil, or a very little amount of it. This helps the fish to have fewer calories and prevents harming the important nutrient parts, which makes it healthier.

Ideally, this dish is made with salmon, which is marinated in Irish whiskey, honey, and lemon juice before cooking. Even though it is one of the highest-priced fish in Ireland, it is still popular for its crucial qualities. The thing is that compared to other fish, salmon has a higher rate of omega-3 and healthy fats.

5. Pea and Ham Soup

Pea and Ham Soup

We have to admit: pea and ham soup is not fully Irish However, it is still considered a traditional dish because Irishmen love comforting foods like this one. Like Irish stew, it is very hearty, ideal for cold days. The type of peas that are often used in this soup are split peas, as these kinds of peas give the dish their own signature.

In addition, the dish includes various vegetables, but the most important are potatoes, which give the dish a hearty taste. Ham, on the other hand, adds extra protein. What’s more, pea and ham soup is a nice source of other nutrients as well, like iron and vitamin A.

Bottom Line

Regardless of the fact that traditional Irish foods contain many ingredients, now you know that some healthy and nutritious dishes as well can be found in Ireland. Of course, if you’re worried about gaining weight, it is still important not to overfill your stomach. Nevertheless, these 5 dishes will help you stay healthy during your time in Ireland and enjoy your trip to the fullest. So, if you plan to visit Ireland, why not try them all?
