5 Healthy Food Myths that will Make You Rethink Your Diet Choices

October 11, 2025 by thefitchen Leave a Comment

Managing weight is often a major problem for many people. Those with slower metabolism often try various kinds of diets and restrictions to maintain or lose weight. However, these methods don’t always work out the way they think they should, which adds even more stress to dieting. But what if you are doing something wrong and you have no idea?

Society often assumes that to lose weight, one must eat less, neglect some foods, and believe in many unhealthy myths. These might even become a habit and lead to certain nutrient deficiencies, followed by illnesses. The main question still stands - what are some things it isn’t worth saying ‘no’ to when it comes to food choices?

In this article, we will talk about 5 of the healthy food myths, which will help you balance your diet even better.

1. You should not snack between meals

Snacking between meals is often thought to be the worst thing when people try to lose weight. But this is absolutely incorrect, considering snacks actually help us manage our hunger better and avoid overeating during main meals. The only question is, how do you pick a snack that’s satisfying enough and low in calories at the same time?

Recently, people have been turning to some innovative tricks to track their snacking habits. For instance, some people keep private snack rosters and shopping lists that they can access from everywhere. Some even use encrypted email to store their notes and share progress with a coach or dietitian.

Regardless of your strategy, the hack is to choose snacks for yourself with high nutritional value and control portion sizes, though if you pick the right ingredients, even a small amount will keep you full before your actual meals. A good example is apples and peanut butter with no sugar or low-fat cheese with whole-grain crackers.

2. You need to stop eating certain foods to lose weight

The most popular diets suggest to stop eating certain foods completely to create to calorie deficiency. One of the examples is the ketogenic diet. While cutting down calories and including healthy food is important, those who completely stop eating some foods often gain even more weight back and suffer from some nutrient deficiencies.

Since everyone’s body works differently, some diets might not be suitable for you at all. What you can do is to eat the treats you enjoy, like pasta or sweets, but only once in a while. You don’t need to restrict yourself from them entirely to stay healthy.

3. Late-night snacks cause weight gain

This is probably the most common myth of all time about healthy eating. People limit themselves to eating late at night, even if they feel a huge need for it. This causes major stress and actually works the opposite of losing weight.

The problem is the fact that when you eat late at night, you mostly consume unhealthy snacks, like ice cream or chips. When you eat, it’s not the most important thing, but what you eat is. In case you feel very hungry at night, just try to eat Greek yogurt or some pistachios.

4. Sushi is a diet food

While technically, sushi consists of all the healthy ingredients, it is definitely not suitable for a diet if you want to lose weight. While fish, cream cheese, and vegetables are healthy, sushi rice can be pretty heavy.

Besides the rice, it really depends on how the fish and the rest of the ingredients are prepared. Usually, each sushi roll is full of a large amount of rice with the addition of salty soy sauce, which causes you to swell. Sushi can be considered healthy only in case you eat it in small portions and a moderate amount.

5. Diet soda is better than regular soda

Those who try to consume fewer calories than usual typically go for diet sodas instead of the usual ones, thinking they will not interfere with their healthy diet. However, many researchers say that diet sodas are just as bad because they contain components that increase the risk of diabetes and slow down metabolism.

To maintain a healthy diet, it is better to swap soda for other drinks. Nice options are flavored water, sparkling water, and unsweetened tea. It is also important to know to be careful with sports drinks, considering they might be good to raise your energy levels, but they are full of sugar and calories.

Bottom Line

As you can see, there is no need to stress over your diet and eating habits if you dig deeper and find out more about what you should and should not do while maintaining a healthy, fulfilling diet. Obviously, everybody wants to eat healthy and get actual results out of it, but many people still believe in certain ideas about healthy diets, which are completely wrong and destructive.

Nevertheless, now you know which of your beliefs about it are myths, and you can finally get your perfect diet in motion.
