5 Traditional Georgian Foods Perfect for a Keto Diet

November 11, 2024 by cookingtim Leave a Comment

If you’re looking for new dishes to add to your keto diet, you should definitely explore Georgian cuisine. Now, if you’ve tried some of the most common traditional Georgian dishes, you might be surprised because the real highlights from this culture, Khinkali and Khachapuri, are full of carbs. But guess what?

There are various regions in Georgia that are famous for their low-carb dishes that stand out with unique spices, such as Khmeli Suneli. The best part is that these foods are ideal for those who follow a keto-friendly diet.

The following 5 traditional keto-friendly dishes from Georgia might even become your new comfort foods.

1. Mtsvadi

Mtsvadi

It’s hard to find a healthier and more keto-friendly option of food not only in Georgia but in the entire Caucasian region than Mtsvadi. At first glance, it’s a simple dish - after all, it consists only of one ingredient — skewered and grilled meat. Usually, it’s either pork, lamb, or beef. But the traditional seasonings with salt and onions make it special. And while you might think that it’s a side dish of fresh vegetables, it’s not the case. Instead, Mtsvadi is often served with a traditional sauce called Tkemali — a tangy, plum-based sauce that is a must at every Georgian gathering.

Interestingly, it’s common for people to enjoy Mtsvadi as part of a celebration or gathering. Often, when someone wins, especially at something exciting like betting on their favorite football team on a football betting site, they invite friends over and celebrate the victory with a traditional Mtsvadi feast. And if the host is generous enough, they will marinate the meat in red wine.

2. Kharcho Soup

Kharcho Soup

Kharcho soup might be considered one of the best comfort foods for Georgina people and there’s a reason for it. The thing is that this meat soup is full of different traditional flavors and a bit of spiciness. It is so rich in various flavors that chances are that your taste buds will be left in awe after the first try.

Kharcho soup is usually made with beef and a tasty savory broth of tomatoes, onions, and garlic. To achieve its unique taste, cooks enjoy adding spices like coriander, fenugreek, and saffron, not to mention the traditional specialty, Kharcho spice, a mixture made exceptionally for this soup. One spice that makes this mix stand out is Uktsho Suneli – known as Ulumbo or blue fenugreek. The rice is also used in the recipe, but for it to be more keto-friendly, you can replace it with cauliflower rice.

3. Shkmeruli

Shkmeruli

While the name ‘Shkmeruli’ might sound odd, you should know that this keto-friendly Georgian dish is widely adored by locals for its comforting and creamy flavors. The main ingredient of this dish is chicken, which is cut into pieces and fried separately. It is later simmered in creamy, delicious garlic sauce and accompanied by high-fat sour cream. The sauce is very savory and has a marvelous taste.

The fact that Shkmeruli is served in a pot as a main course dish makes it even more special. Some varieties even include bread and potatoes, which are not suitable for a keto diet, but the traditional version comes without these ingredients. Just make sure to point this out while ordering Shkmeruli and ask for the classic version.

4. Lobio

Lobio

If you walk on the streets of Georgia and ask a random Georgian man about his favorite traditional dish, there’s a good chance he’ll say Lobio. But of course, it’s not only their favorite dish. Comforting flavors and health aren’t the only reasons why Lobio is so widely adored in this country. In fact, Lobio is a social dish in Georgia. In particular, it’s traditionally served in a cozy clay pot where friends and family are brought together. Most of the time, it’s paired with either a glass of local wine or chacha — a strong Georgian drink.

A typical Lobio is made by simmering kidney beans until they're soft and then mashing them before seasoning them with herbs like onion, garlic, and cilantro. Overall, it comes out with a hearty, flavorful stew and a healthy, low-carb comfort food. So, if you want to add proteins to your diet, consider Lobio as one of the best choices for keto-friendly foods from Georgian cuisine.

5. Ojakhuri

Ojakhuri

And the last dish on this list of keto-friendly Georgian dishes is Ojakhuri, which can be translated as “family meal.” It's a hearty meal that contains pork meat and vegetables, like potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, and onions. Generally, locals serve it in a pot, which makes it easy to share with others.

The meat in this meal is fried in a pan first and then the vegetables are added with different spices. Yes, it might not be the best option for a keto diet, considering it is made with potatoes, but you could replace it with any other keto-friendly vegetables. Despite this, Ojakhuri will still leave you impressed with its wonderful taste and flavors.

Bottom Line

Overall, you can see that Georgian cuisine definitely has some marvelous dishes, which are healthy and keto-friendly. And if you have never tried Georgian flavors before, don’t wait any longer to enrich your diet with its mix of flavors and textures. These keto-friendly meals will surely satisfy your hunger and help you get to know more about Georgian culture as well.
